The Fox and Hounds – Santa Monica, CA

I know, I posted this matchbook already. But I just used it to make fun of the Santa Monicans. This time I want to elaborate!

The Fox and Hounds, besides having a totally cool matchbook, was a popular restaurant in Santa Monica. I don’t know when it opened, but my educated guess would be the 50’s. I found a menu from 1955 and it just REEKS of Frenchness, and we all know about that big kiss-ass French boom in the 50’s. Here’s a pic of the 1955 menu (courtesy of LA Public Library)

Shatastic!

I know, everyone and their mom has seen this clip. But I’m posting it to show that the fabulous William Shatner is down for smoking on TV. Well, this WAS a Sci-Fi convention, so maybe it wasn’t on TV. Yet and still, Bill has time to belt out a classic while puffing away on a cool one. God bless you, Rock-Et-Man!

STFU!

Man, I hate this guy. Nothing on a personal level – I know he was an actor and was making a living, but the “Call for Phillip Morris!” guy has always creeped me out. Not because he’s a little person, but because he’s a little person AND a bellhop. Imagine sitting there in the Waldorf-Astoria enjoying a 3 martini lunch and you turn around to see this thing walking around and yelling in your face. If it were me, I would say “Look, Phillip Morris isn’t here. Here’s two bucks, now get the hell out of here and QUIT YELLING! Mommy has a headache…”

Meet me at Julie’s…..

Julie Kohl opened Julie’s Restaurant in 1941, and it instantly became a legendary University of California (USC) hang out until 1975, when Julie closed it down to open up Julie’s Trojan Barrell, a classic neighborhood bar that had the slogan “Where old and new friends meet”. From the beginning, the restaurant/bar had a steady stream of USC clientèle, such as Rod Dedeaux, Art Bartner, and former City Council President John Ferraro. Julie was such a supporter of the USC Trojan Band that she donated $100,000 so the band would have a new home on campus. Julie was even inducted into the Trojan Hall of Fame! What a gal and what a place!

I really have a problem with the early 70’s. Home decor was horrible. Fashion was horrible. The whole post hippie – pre disco era was gross. Everything about the early to mid 70’s just creeps me out. I know I’m not explaining my reasons, but I’m too tired. So here’s a sample of early 70’s creepy cigarette advertising. Let goooooooo…..

Ok, when I first got this ashtray years ago….

I had a good laugh. “World Famous Bakersfield Inn”? C’mon! World Famous for what, dust? I know, I know – some good country music came out of Bakersfield, like Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, etc… But we’re talking Bakersfield here, people!
So when I decided to do tonight’s blog, I started to do some research on the World Famous Bakersfield Inn, and I found out that the place was actually super nice! More than nice, it was beautiful! I could hardly believe that something this hip was ever in Bakersfield. So even though it might not technically be “world famous”, at least we know now that Bakersfield had SOME class.
At one time.
