Wilshire and Western, 1964

billboard1

Pardon my French, but this picture totally wet my panties! This photo is of a parking lot at the intersection of Wilshire and Western in Los Angeles (neighborhood: Koreatown). It looks like the North/East corner, making it across the street from the Wiltern Theater and directly were the Red Line station stands. My friend K-Town Matt lives in the building that’s partially obstructed by the Richfield sign, so that’s just another reason I dig this photo so much.

But look at the fucking billboards! Yes! I appreciate your concern about my carburetor, Richfield Service Station. And I literally go crazy about the old school Old Englishy “Bank of America” sign. But the KTLA Channel 5 billboard made me weep like a little bitch – I know it’s hard to make out, but the sign says “The news is NOW, see it live 5 TV.” Sigh……

But the creme de’ le’ creme (and the whole reason for this blog) is the Newport billboard with the big cigarettes hanging off the side. Between the magnificent architecture of the Wiltern Theater and the billboards across the street, I wouldn’t mind waiting at the bus stop at that intersection.

PS – I love the station wagon on the bottom left corner with the wood paneling.

PS – I’m also breaking out some old school KTLA clips while I’m in the KTLA mood

R.I.P.C.N.R

I know I’m late on this, but I’ve been in shock since it happened:

Charles Nelson Reilly was one of THE classiest smokers around :-)

Welcome to Smoker’s Hack

I know, I know - smoking is bad for you. And I agree - smoking is a gross, filthy habit. But instead of focusing on the negatives, I'd like to concentrate on the positive - a different time, a different place, and a different state of mind. A time that was fun, cool, and simple. Propagandaish - yes! Decadent - yes! Thoughtless - yes! But if the "good ol' days" were so bad, they why do so many people clamor it's return? And that's why I bring you Smoker's Hack. So inhale, exhale, and enjoy! Stumble It!
